We based ourselves here for trips to the Badlands NP, just down the road, Mt. Great for kids!! You can walk around the ranch and explore as we did, with the dog as your guide, but there are no real trails and the only advice we were given is "you can go anywhere on the ranch". The ranch itself is very large with everything already mentioned in previous reviews, animals and all. You could open the window but there are a LOT of mosquitoes in this area at the time we were there and the screens had holes. The centrally-controlled A/C was turned on only during the day so the nights got warm.
Heaven forbid anyone get up earlier, as they did at 5:30am when we were there, and depart at 5:50am.walls are very thin and parking is just outside the windows, so all noise carries easily. The house is very 'awake' from that point on. Not the most solid construction however, and when breakfast is served at 7:30am (no exceptions) and everyone else wakes up for it (coffee/tea starting at 7am), you will know it by the creaking of floors, closing of doors, water running, voices, etc. The accommodations are very comfortable, basic, not luxury, but a nice farmhouse feel. They will answer any questions you might have about the area if you ask. The owners are pretty quiet for the most part and rarely enter the upstairs guest area as they reside on the lower level with their young children. Some like chatty, some like private, and you can get either depending on the day. They left the next morning and the (mainly) couples who checked in that day were more the quiet types and preferred solitude. Our first night coincided with several families that were very extroverted and very chatty, so there was no real quiet time on the patio (shared by all). Very simple, concrete patio but while basic it served it's purpose to provide guests a place to sit and view the surroundings.
There is a sliding door to the shared patio with great views, metal chairs and a plastic picnic bench. fully functional but can only accommodate one family at a time cooking, so if there are several families cooking it is awkward - you have to time your meals accordingly a living room/dining room a separate game room which is closed off by a door and we didn't use (the ping pong paddles were ancient and hard to play with, plus we chose the out-of-doors instead) and a hallway with the guest rooms and extra shared bathroom. The 1st floor consists of an entryway/check in area small shared kitchen with stove/oven, fridge, microwave, dishes, glassware, etc. We stayed several nights in the main guesthouse on the 1st floor (which is ground level.
This is a comfortable B&B and when you are there, as well as who else is there, can change the experience.
